Happ Plus Proxy Mode: What It Is and When to Use It
Besides its full VPN tunnel, the Happ app also runs a proxy mode built on Xray-core. Within a Happ Plus subscription, both modes rely on the same key from the Telegram bot but handle device traffic in different ways. Here's how proxy differs from VPN and when it's the more convenient choice.
How VPN mode works
In VPN mode, the app creates a virtual network interface and routes all device traffic through it — browser, system services, every program at once. It's the simplest, most predictable connection method: nothing needs separate configuration, and everything works as soon as the key is added.
What makes Proxy mode different
In Proxy mode, Happ runs a local proxy server based on Xray-core, and only the apps or browser set up to use that proxy send their traffic through it. This is handy when you want to redirect specific programs rather than the whole device, without setting up a system-wide VPN tunnel.
What the proxy mode is built on
Both modes available with a Happ Plus subscription — VPN and Proxy — run on Xray-core and share the same key from the Telegram bot. There's no separate encryption protocol to configure; the difference is purely in how traffic enters the tunnel. Full details are on /en/proxy/.
When proxy beats VPN
Happ Proxy mode is worth using when:
- you only want to route a browser or one specific app through the server;
- a system-wide VPN conflicts with other software or network settings;
- you need finer control over which traffic goes through the server and which stays direct.
For more precise per-app routing while staying in VPN mode, check the split tunneling guide at /en/split-tunneling/.
Turning Proxy on
Proxy mode is switched on directly in the Happ app's settings on the platform you're using, and desktop users also get a dedicated Happ Proxy Utility that simplifies integrating it with other software. The general connection walkthrough is on /en/setup/.
Frequently asked questions
What's the main difference between Proxy and VPN in Happ Plus?
VPN routes all device traffic through a tunnel; Proxy only routes the apps or browser configured to use the local proxy.
Does Proxy mode need a separate key?
No, it uses the same key as VPN mode, issued through the service Telegram bot.
Which platforms support Happ Proxy?
All platforms Happ supports, with an additional utility for desktop systems that simplifies setup.
Not sure whether to use VPN or Proxy?
Pick VPN for a simple connect-and-forget setup across the whole device; pick Proxy when you need selective routing for specific programs.
